"The Mission"

The project "Light of Hope" is aiming to raise awareness to the growing amount of violence within our communities, and the devastating and lasting effects it has on families and friends of victims. We hope that everybody who comes into contact with the project, finds something positive to take from it.

The Project 'Light of Hope' - What is it, and Why?

Welcome to our project.  My name is Brenda-Lee Heathcote.  I have a beautiful fiance, Scott Lloyd Shelly, and a beautiful stepdaughter, Basia.

My brother, Brian James Heathcote, was murdered, while walking home one night in January 2007.  He was only 40.  A respected radio announcer, he was known as 'The Voice of Kmart'.

Over the 4 years preceding his untimely death, if you had walked into a 'Kmart', 'SuperCheap Auto', or 'Super AMart' store, you would have heard his voice.  He worked for a company called 'Australian Retail Radio Network'.

'So This Is Life' won the 2007 Rudy Brandsma Award at the Australian Songwriters Awards, for excellence in songwriting.

He also worked through the years on many other radio stations as an announcer, live broadcaster and also did voice overs for Channel 10.  He was my only sibling, a wonderful and talented man, also very gifted as a graphic artist. The court case is still continuing.

I have been a musician since I can remember.  I have always supported myself with my profession.  The aftershock of Brian's murder, left me lost.  I gave up my live singing, writing - I just couldn't - I didn't even want to hear the tv, or radio.

I turned to painting, another of my loves. I read an article in a local paper, about a lady, whose brother had also been murdered, some 11 years (at the time) earlier.

Cath Grant

She was an artist, her name - Cath Grant.  She was holding an exhibition of her work at a gallery in Murwillumbah, and dedicated it to her brother Michael.  I wondered what type of pictures she might be painting - were they dark, bright? Given her situation?

Where was she 11 years later, down the track?  I had to meet her.  I took the clipping from the paper and drove out to Murwillumbah to meet her in person.  With a call from the curator, Cath drove straight out from her home, where we sat and talked for about 3 hours, and have been inseparable since. Her paintings are some of the brightest, intricate, 'positive' pieces of artwork I have ever seen.  She's an exceptionally gifted artist, and person.

Then, in about April, of 2007, I had a phone call from an artist (musical kind) from Dubbo, NSW - Sharon Lane. Sharon asked me if I could write her some tunes for her album, unaware of what had happened at the time.

I told Sharon, and then she told me her story!  She has quite a tale of her own that you may have seen on RPA and RPA (Where Are They Now).
Sharon Lane
I wrote Sharon a song, and sent her some existing tracks I had, as I wasn't really up to much yet, at that point.  I wrote her a song called 'So This Is Life'.  She loved it.  It was pretty deep, me just spilling out my heart, how I felt at the time.  As it happened, Sharon went on to release a fabulous album, but decided to use her own penned material.
Having the song floating free again, I decided to enter it into the Australian Songwriter's Awards.  It was chosen from out of around 4000 entries, to win the prestigeous 'Rudy Brandsma Award'. That was the start of 'Light of Hope'.

I decided if one song, could have such an effect, then what about a whole album, written from 'the horses mouth' so to speak, and focused towards people who have been in my shoes.

This would give me a goal - and do something positive instead of sitting around crying.  (Mind you, that's all you feel like doing).

The only problem was . . . "I didn't have any money"

The Money.

I have to go back a little here, and mention, that when I was really doing it tough financially, Cath mentioned to me that there were funds available to families of victims, to help them through the tough times.  I did then, contact my local branch, the Queensland Homicide Victims Support Group.

(QHVSG) Unfortunately, this group, the Qld branch, did not have any funds to offer.  They had a maximum of $350 to offer.  I didn't claim it, thinking there may be someone worse off than me that needs it!  I did, however, think that this group could use some assistance themselves.

We went to a meeting of the local Gold Coast City Council's 'Arts Queensland' regional arts development fund, grant seminar, to find out about grants available.  There was a grant, we could apply for, but it had to be for the development of the artist.

Well, I went about making a proposal.  With the help of all the artists who agreed to be on the album, and whole lot of paperwork!, we got knocked back on the first round, but re-applied, fixing our errors, and were successful on the second round.  We were awarded $6000.  The dream, 'Light of Hope' was about to become a reality.

Matthew Stanley Foundation?
What is the Matthew Stanley Foundation?

The Matthew Stanley Foundation was established by Paul and Kay Stanley, parents of Matthew, who was 15 when he died after being bashed outside a teenagers’ party in September 2006.

Matt (who was known affectionately to his friends as Stanley) was a talented sportsman who also excelled academically at school. But what became apparent after his death was his enormous popularity.

Matthew Stanley

Without trying, he managed to touch the hearts of so many people, from his peers to young children and adults, students, teachers and parents. He simply stood out from the crowd.   The Stanleys’ tragic loss triggered an outpouring of grief in the local community that demanded action.

In response to this, it was decided to form the Matthew Stanley Foundation. The Foundation – made up of Paul and Kay plus a group of concerned citizens – hopes to get the message out that senseless youth violence is unacceptable.

It aims to educate young people about how to avoid potentially dangerous situations and make parents and teenagers aware of possible risks at parties and what they can do to make them safer. If one life can be saved by the Foundation’s initiatives then young Stanley won’t have died in vain.

The following list of Artists, are participants in the album "Light of Hope".  It is an album of 12 songs, written by Brenda-Lee Heathcote, produced by Scott Lloyd Shelly, and sung by various artists.

"Light of Hope" gratefully acknowledges assistance from RADF and the Gold Coast City Council, without which, would not have been possible.

We are hoping to raise awareness to the growing amount of violence within our communities, and the effect it has on families and friends of victims.

LIGHT OF HOPE !

We hope to provide support also, to the QHVSG (Queensland Victims of Homicide Support Group) who have given us the backing of the "One Punch Can Kill Campaign". Hopefully we can raise a little money, and a shed little light - a "Light of Hope", on a subject not so willingly spoken about.

The songs are all of an understanding nature, and a positive outlook on a such dark topic. "Light of Hope" is a work in progress, so keep on checking in from time to time to see who has been added, and please sign the guestbook!
